Oregan Hoskins quits as Saru president

After more than a decade in charge of South African Rugby, Oregan Hoskins steps down as president. Vice president Mark Alexander is now serving as the acting president until an election can be held.

Hoskins announced his resignation on Wednesday morning during a general meeting in Johannesburg.

It is reported that Hoskins was set to be in the firing line at this meeting of the 14 rugby unions, with a number of Provinces calling for him to sacked.

A number of general council members expressed that Hoskins was under increasing pressure.

According to EWN sports reporter Karl Lewis there's been a power struggle brewing between the CEO of Saru Jurie Roux and Hoskins as President.

A number of issues have come up at Saru, and Hoskins has been under pressure for not coming forth in dealing with these issues. A lot of people see this as lack of leadership, says Lewis.

Hoskins has been mum on issues of transformation since he took over from Brian van Rooyen, up until the Minister started putting a lot of pressure on Saru.

It is not clear as to when the election will be held to elect the new president and who is likely to occupy the position.
