"Our voice is going to be strong in all the municipalities" - Floyd Shivambu

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Deputy President Floyd Shivambu says that the party is in a stronger position as an opposition in the country's hung municipalities than it would have been in a coalition.

Speaking to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo, Shivambu says that the EFF is in a better position to advocate for the interests of people, instead of occupying positions in the country's municipalities without a popular mandate.

On Wednesday, the EFF announced that it will not enter into formal coalitions in the country's municipalities, but will help the Democratic Alliance (DA), to win Johannesburg, Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Bay and Ekurhuleni.

Shivambu is confident that the EFF will be strong opposition in the country's 24 hung municipalities.

Listen to the conversation below:

We hold the deciding majority (in hung municipalities) which decides whether a budget is passed or not

Floyd Shivambu, EFF Deputy President

There were never mayoral campaigns in the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). We do not believe that individuals are more important than the organisation itself

Floyd Shivambu, EFF Deputy President

We believe we must earn our positions in Council as the EFF, so we are able to govern with a clear mandate and implement all policies and commitments of the EFF that were made in our election manifesto

Floyd Shivambu, EFF Deputy President

Shivambu also described what happened behind the scenes in coalition talks between the African National Congress (ANC) and the EFF.

Three of the (ANC's) top six were part of the coalition discussion with the EFF. They went back to the NEC, who rejected the EFF offer.
