EFF disclosed their vote at Joburg Council where Mashaba was ushered in

After nearly 12 hours at the City's inaugural council sitting, Herman Mashaba was elected as the new Mayor of Johannesburg on Monday.

Mashaba received 144 council votes while former Mayor Parks Tau received 125 votes.

EWN's Clement Manyathela explains that Mashaba asked to postpone his acceptance speech in memory of the ANC councillor who passed on.

The ANC earlier confirmed that its ill councilor had died after collapsing during the city’s Council meeting.

Proceedings were constantly delayed by disruptions, scuffles between party agents, and the EFF caucus members who had accused ANC councillor Dan Bovu of soliciting bribes for votes.

Manyathela reports that proceedings were also delayed by debates over the laws on secret ballots.

The EFF wanted to ensure that none of their councillors were indeed bribed to vote for the ANC, after they claimed Bovu offered EFF councillors R500 000 in exchange for their support.

Party agents disagreed on the IEC's regulation. Some of the party agents like the EFF wanted the councillors to show who they voted for.

The DA's Kevin Wax was elected as the Chief Whip and DA's Vasco Da Gama the Speaker of the council.

Mashaba has hit the ground running and is expected to elect his mayoral committee on Wednesday, explains Manyathela.
