ANC's Patricia Kumalo elected Ekurhuleni Speaker

African National Congress (ANC) Councillor Patricia Kumalo has been elected the new Speaker of the City of Ekurhuleni.

Kumalo got 117 votes, beating the Democratic Alliance's (DA) Shadow Shabangu who received 106 votes.

The City's first council is currently underway, the new mayor and chief whip will also be elected today.

The DA raised an objection on Mzwandile Masina's nomination as the mayor candidate, saying he is still a Member of Parliament.

The Speaker also clarified that if Mzwandile Masina was still a Member of Parliament he would not have been sworn in here today.
