"Kenny Maphatsoe is a sad little man" - Ronnie Kasrils

In the High Court in Pretoria yesterday, Deputy Defense Minister and leader of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association Kebby Maphatsoe has now apologized to former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils.

He has apologised unreservedly for claiming that he had directed the woman known as Khwezi, who accused now president Jacob zuma of raping here in 2006 before Zuma was acquitted.

Kasrils had gone to court accusing Maphatsoe of defamation for making the claim.

Ronnie Kasrils joins Stephen Grootes on the line from Johannesburg, and believes justice has finally been done.

it could have been settled two years ago when I simply asked for an apology and a retraction, nothing more...but that was contemptuously rejected.

Now two years later a settlement has been reached.

During Kasrils testimony in court, he gave evidence about how Maphatsoe had deserted an MK camp during the struggle years. Grootes asked him if he feels concern over possible cross examination in this regard may have led to his decision to settle.

I am absolutely sure, whether him or his advisers in MKMVA, they were extremely unhappy about the developments.

Ronnie Kasrils, former intelligence minister

He says he is certain those behind Maphatsoe in the ANC and government would have been behind this move to then settle and avoid information being made public.

I think it goes very high. I think the ANC are smarting from the electoral defeat they have suffered. The electorate have slapped them across the face very deservingly.

Kasrils pulled no punches. he said pliable people like Maphatsoe have been used as "tools and fools" by those higher up on government, to cover up their deeds.

Kasrils says the woman known as 'Khwezi' has been "dreadfully abused, her life ruined" and says that now he can provide a trust fund for her through his attorneys and it is very fitting to do so, for both herself and her ailing mother. He says that is his decision.
