LeadSA: Hospice Palliative care takes care of many in need

The general perception is that hospices are for the end of life care, but palliative care is appropriate before people reaching various stages of illness.

Dr Liz Gwyther, CEO of Hospice Palliative Care Association in SA says its not only about clinical care but about going an extra mile. At the heart of palliative care is compassion for others.

The organisation's outreach programme has many volunteers who make it possible to provide the many services free of charge.

We have a wonderful cohort of volunteers. Each hospice really relies strongly on volunteers.

The organisation provides any additional care that patients need. It may just be information needed to manage the illness better.

They develop a palliative care programme suited to each individual.
