Whatsapp mom's genital photo a cautionary tale

Margaret from North-West Province, posted a picture of her genitals intended for her husband, on a hockey mothers’ school WhatsApp group.

She received a great deal of backlash. Someone in the group then posted the photograph on the internet and it quickly went viral.

Rebecca Davis, standing in for John Maytham, spoke to social media expert Dave Duarte about the incident.

He says the woman can take legal action.

But it is near impossible to remove content from the internet he says.

Trying to remove content from the internet is like trying to remove pee from a swimming pool.

He says the fact that people have spread the photograph at scale, shows lack of empathy. He says the tone of the online conversation is people having fun at her expense.

And perhaps it is a cautionary tale for all.

It is spreading because there is something surprising and relatable to it.

Duarte says the only way to bury this is for the woman to create a great deal more social posts about herself that will mean this story will not pop up as soon as anyone searches for her. But there is no easy solution.
