The Guptas might be planning to sell their assets to themselves - Jeremy Cronin

A number of issues pertaining to the state of politics in South Africa were discussed at the SACP's Central Executive Committee meeting held over the weekend.

Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) Jeremy Cronin says the party is concerned about corporate capture of the critical institutions of the state.

Cronin, who is also Deputy Minister of Public Works, says they spoke at length about the announcement of the Gupta's to sell all their South African holdings.

We think they are likely to be selling it back to themselves via an investment vehicle they've set up overseas.

We have urged our financial institutions, our financial intelligence centre, the Reserve Bank and others to watch whatever happens in that space very carefully.

Cronin says we can't point fingers at a single individual for the problems this country is experiencing, because the problem of state capture extends deep into the ANC. However, the party would like to see the President acting more forcefully on these matters.

He acknowledged that a lot of issues in South Africa points in the direction of President Zuma but says both the National Executive Committee and the ANC needs to make important decisions.

It is important that these collectives assess their collective responsibilities more effectively

Jeremy Cronin, Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party

What we suggest is for the ANC to call for consultation of a non elective conference. The ANC seems to be battling with leadership transition moments.... it is dangerous for the country and the economy

Cronin also spoke to 702's John Robbie and indicated that recalling President Zuma is solely an ANC decision which they can't undermine. He says being embroiled in the matters of the ANC back in 2006/2007 when former President Thabo Mbeki was recalled, was the biggest mistake they've ever made and that is the lesson they need to learn as a party.

We have our own particular roles and we support the ANC collective but if we must intervene robustly as a faction, we are undermining the nature of the alliance and also not doing ourselves a favour in the end.

Jeremy Cronin, Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party

The SACP did not discuss leaving the alliance during the CEC meeting but rather discussed whether the alliance is going to survive, says Cronin.
