The joys and challenges of single parenting

Single parenting comes with its own set of joys, challenges and responsibilities that might be too much for one person to handle.

Ilze Alberts, family psychologist says single parents often worry about how their children will turn out without the presence of the other parent.

She says they are often overwhelmed by playing a double role, being a mom and a dad at the same time.

Alberts spoke about prominent world figures, like Barack Obama, who grew up without a father figure.

There is no reason for any child growing up without the other parent to be a victim of their circumstances, they can rather become the masters of their destination

Ilze Alberts, Family Psychologist

Ilze Alberts, Family Psychologist

She says of course children will ask questions as they grow older, wondering why their family is different from other families with both parents.

At that point parents should be able to explain that there are different families with a dad or a mom only, some with two moms and two dads and others with a mom and a dad.
