Male circumcision decreases the risk of cervical cancer in women

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD). It creates penile and vaginal warts, according to urologist, Dr Shangai Mutambirwa.

Technically if you are having any form of sexual activity you will have HPV.

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, Urologist

He says there are over 200 versions of HPV which is also the common cause of cervical cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, penile cancer and anorectal cancer.

Cervical cancer is the most common female cancer in women aged 15 to 44 years in South Africa. It can be detected early when women do pap smears.

According to research done in East Africa male circumcision decreases the risk of HPV transmission between men and women.

That doesn't mean you are protected completely from cervical cancer, you still have to go and get tested

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, Urologist

The department of Health has been distributing HPV vaccines to public school and Dr Shingai is urging parents to talk to their children about it and help them to get the vaccine. It has to be given to children between 11 - 13 years old before they start any form of sexual activity.

The mobility and mortality from cervical and penile cancer is so high and I think you will be doing your children a disservice if you don't go out and get them vaccinated.

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, Urologist
