The state of SA's politics through the eyes of Sipho Pityana and Judge Kriegler

Friday Stand-In Karima Brown had a conversation with former Foreign Affairs director general and executive chairman of Izingwe Capital Limited, Sipho Pityana, as well as Judge Johan Kriegler about the state of politics in South Africa.

The conversation started off with the speech Pityana gave at Minister Makhenkesi Stofile’s funeral recently where he expressed his discontent with President Jacob Zuma.

Pityana says the pain Minister Stofile expressed in his dying days about the state of the country and the state of the ANC is what compelled him to give his hard-hitting speech.

I am sure the pain he carried is not his alone, most of us are going through pain about where the ANC is at and more importantly where the country is at..

He says anybody who has a sense of pride in South Africa and what it represents should be pained about where this country is and about the fact that we’ve lost the plot.

Pityana also touched on the ongoing war between the Hawks and Pravin Gordhan.

We are now in the middle of what people says its a fight between various departments and Treasury, it isn't. It is actually the fight between the President and Minister of Finance.

The President has no confidence in the Minister of Finance. The institutions that are at war with him in one way or another seem to have an association with the Guptas...

Former ConCourt Judge Johan Kriegler accompanied former Sars officials when they presented themselves to the Hawks when they were summoned to do so.

Finance Minister Parvin Gordhan declined the Hawks request and did not present himself for a warning statement.

Judge Kriegler explained how the South African criminal justice system works.

There is no provision in South African law where the police summon you to come and give a statement under warning or otherwise, that's a gimmick, that's a political gimmick.

That is a tactical gimmick used to intimidate, to humiliate and to make public opinion active against somebody... If a crime has been committed you take that case to court.
