Saint Teresa declaration sparks debate on sainthood and 'poverty porn'

St Teresa of Calcutta has been proclaimed a saint by Pope Francis in a ceremony at The Vatican on Sunday.

Formerly known as Mother Teresa, the Catholic nun devoted her life to helping the sick and impoverished in India. She has been revered for her servitude, often being likened to peace advocates such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.

702/Cape Talk's Eusebius McKaiser opened the lines and asked callers to share their thoughts regarding sainthood, miracles and whatever criticisms they have about religion.

Listen to the conversation below:

Don't ever run Mother Teresa or the Catholic church down.... God performs miracles for me in my life everyday.

Marleen, caller

I think what happens is we use very little of our brain capacity. When something happens that we cannot explain then we tend to hold onto religion.

Eva, caller
