Shoprite CEO R100 million payout unethical - Wits philosophy professor

Professor at the Wits philosophy department, Prof. Lucy Allais, has come out strongly against Shoprite CEO Whitey Basson's receiving R100 million payout.

The group stated that half of the money was a bonus and that he has led them through challenging conditions.

Allais says the pay is not just about ethics but also about politics and economics.

She says incentivising and rewarding top people for being globally competitive should not apply to those already being paid high salaries given South Africa's high levels of inequality.

It seems amazingly a stupid move in South Africa today when our economy has really been struggling and people are struggling.
