TAC says govt may be ill-equipped to roll out ARVs for all

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has raised concerns that the Health Department is not adequately prepared for their new HIV treatment plan.

This after Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced that all HIV-positive South Africans will have access to anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) by September this year.

The CD4 eligibility criterion for ARV medication will be removed from healthcare policies after clinical evidence showed the benefits of early treatment.

But the TAC has questioned whether there are enough government resources, including medical staff, to implement the roll-out.

TAC National General Secretary, Anele Yawa says the advocacy group is worried about the implementation at provincial, district and facility level.

We don't have enough doctors, nurses, community workers... In many instances patients in health facilities are often turned away because of shortages of medication.

Anele Yawa, TAC National General Secretary

According to Yawa, the failure or success of the new treatment programme will rely on the allocation of funds and other resources, as well as the readiness of MECs at provincial levels.
