Joe Slovo High learners protest fines for late-coming

Learners at Joe Slovo Technical High in Khayelitsha went on a rampage on Wednesday morning setting alight two classrooms. The protests at the school started on Tuesday when a group of late-comers burnt rubbish bins and targeted the principal's car, calling for his removal.

The learners took the matter to the Western Cape Education Department offices demanding that the principal be removed from the school.

CapeTalk's John Maytham spoke to *Xolani one of the teachers at the school who said learners are very angry at the school's principal.

He says the principal collects money from learners for being late and for falling pregnant, and asked to pay fines of up to R800, though nobody knows where the money is going.
