Families want to run Langlaagte mine rescue op

Several more illegal miners have emerged from underground today, but authorities say it's unclear whether they're part of the original group that's been trapped in a Langlaagte shaft since last week.

The city's oldest gold mine was cordoned off after a fire halted rescue operations yesterday.

Three men who re-surfaced were immediately arrested while an unknown number fled the area, reports EWN's Masa Kekana.

Other illegal miners who were rescued and hospitalised on Sunday have now been discharged and also arrested, Kekana explains.

Community members have called on authorities to allow other illegal miners from the area permission to enter the shaft and rescue their loved ones.

Rescue operations remain suspended with an unknown number of illegal miners trapped underground since last week.

Police spokesman Kay Makhubela says that they've received conflicting reports about the number of illegal miners that are still trapped.

According to Makhubela, there are illegal mining syndicates where people live and operate underground for as long as two months.

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane is also expected to arrive on the scene and assess the situation.
