At least 16 people have been killed in a 5,9-magnitude earthquake that's shaken the Lake Victoria region in Tanzania.
The Africa Report's Crystal Orderson explains that the scale of the earthquake has been revised to a depth of 40 kilometres.
Rescue officials, including members of the Tanzania Red Cross Society, are on the ground providing relief following the widespread devastation.
Orderson says hundreds of people have lost their homes, and hospitals are over-subscribed in the aftermath of the quake.
The hospitals are not able to cope and they're having volunteers from across Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya to help people in this part of the country.— Crystal Orderson, Southern Africa Editor of the Africa Report
The tremor could be felt as far as Rwanda, western Kenya and parts of Uganda, which share the waters of Lake Victoria, Orderson reports.
