Moms find strength from support group for families of special needs kids

A heart-warming NPO is determined to help support local families with special-needs children.

The Daniël and Friends Fund is in hounour of a brave young boy, Daniël le Roux, who succumbed to complications of Leigh Syndrome on the 23rd August 2013.

Leanie le Roux explains that Daniël’s paediatrician, who had cared for him with much love and compassion, envisioned an initiative that would help other families courageously managing rare disorders.

Now families of children with special needs have access to necessary support and resources to see them through similar challenges.

Mother Nicky de Beer explains that the network helps raise awareness about special needs through various advocacy projects.

They also have 24-hour Whatsapp support group, host workshops and information sessions to help educate and empower families.

The Daniël and Friends Fund also offers financial assistance, a family inclusive programme and day-to-day resources required to by care to children with special needs.

Since the initiative launched in 2014, the fund has directly reached a network of 19 families and works closely with other community groups and initiatives.
