'State capture' may not be priority for new Public Protector - Corruption Watch

President Jacob Zuma has appointed Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the new Public Protector to replace Thuli Mandonsela. Mkhwebane will officially start on October 15, for a period of seven years.

A tweet from SABC news reporter states that Busisiwe Mkhwebane will‚ in an interview‚ reveal why she believes Thuli Madonsela's probe into state capture “can’t be a priority”.

David Lewis Managing Director for Corruption Watch says it means the bulk of the Public Protector's work is going to be on issues that affect ordinary people which is not what the office prioritised in the past.

Although issues like State capture may not directly affect ordinary people's lives, they are of utmost importance and I am afraid the Public Protector doesn't really have a choice on whether to focus on one or the other, both needs to be done.

David Lewis Managing Director for Corruption Watch

Lewis says issues like State capture and Nkandla help ordinary people make up their minds about the quality of their government and public service.

He says he would be very disappointed if there is no final report into State capture after Madonsela leaves office given all the work she has invested in it already.
