Wits general assembly postponed after mediation talks collapse

The University of Witwatersrand has postponed the General Assembly after mediation talks with protesting #FeesMustFall students collapsed on Friday.

Speaking from the university on Friday, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Habib said that lectures would resume on Monday.

Expressing his disappointment at the latest developments, Habib said that important security risks would arise if he agreed to the students' desire to continue protesting. He said that he was willing to continue engaging students but couldn't sacrifice the 2016 academic year.

In the statement, Habib explained the issues surrounding the issue as a representative of all university vice-chancellors:

"We had reached consensus with all University constituencies including Council, Senate, Convocation, labour and staff, but not with the protesting students. Despite all our attempts and the energetic engagement of former Black Student Society and SRC leaders, the mediation process with the protesting students was unsuccessful."
