According to StatsSA, education costs have risen 9, 3% in March 2015 compared with March 2014.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies spoke to Patrick Kelly, Head of Price Statistics at Statistics South Africa, to get some informed insights into the actual costs of higher education in South Africa.
Kelly gave a breakdown of what high school education costs according to its different categories (public schools, former model C and private schools).
He says university costs depend on the course one is doing. The first year of university doing a basic course like BA studies would cost between R30 000 - R45 000.
If a student is doing a more technically specialised degree like engineering that could cost in the range of R50 00 - R65 000 in the first year.
One could add that up and see that you'll be paying quite a whack and this of course is excluding accommodation, transport and books...— Patrick Kelly, Head of Price Statistics at Statistics South Africa
