Advice on how to instill discipline in young children

Discipline is the process of teaching a child which kind of behaviour is socially acceptable and which is not.

Clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane explains that the practice of discipline is constantly evolving as social norms continue to change.

She advises parents, teachers and guardians identify what mode of discipline they prefer most, in conjunction with the measures that children respond best to.

Jiyane describes discipline as a variety of activities which socialise children into understanding the guidelines applicable for different environments, whether in private or in public.

She explains that discipline is nuanced and becomes a social marker and evolving lenses through which society views itself.

According to Jiyane, there a different schools of thought around how to best "implement" discipline.

She offers the following advice:

  • It is important to measure whether the consequences is appropriate for the action, Jiyane maintains.

She says proactive teaching, corrective measures and punitive means are the three models around which discipline is based.

  • Jiyane encourages care-givers to agree on the effective disciplinary measures for individual children, as no two kids are the same.
  • She also urges parents to make an effort to contextualise the behaviour's and attitudes they instill in their children.

It's easier to say: just because I said so. But it is important to help children understand their behaviour. Conscious parenting is teaching your children how to think and understand themselves.
