Grade 12 learner fatally stabbed in gang related fight

A Grade 12 learner from Ihlumelo Senior Secondary School in Paarl was fatally stabbed in an incident that is thought to be gang related.

Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for Minister Debbie Schafer (WCED) says they are aware of a rival gang that attend the same school.

The learner was attacked by five pupils at the school and the department has confirmed this was gang activity.

She says the police were called immediately after the incident but learners were still fighting with each other and police presence did not act as a deterrent.

We also had a security guard at the premises who tried to prevent the incident and he was also attacked.

Jessica Shelver, Spokesperson for Minister Debbie Schafer (WCED)

Additional security and police presence has been requested by the department to try and contain the situation, Shelver said.
