Govt policy is to provide free higher education for poor only - Nzimande

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says the government policy is committed to realising free higher education for the poor.

Nzimande made his submission to the Fees Commission of Inquiry which sat in Centurion, Pretoria on Thursday.

President Jacob Zuma established the commission to investigate the feasibility of fee-free higher education.

Nzimande made it clear that government would provide free higher education for the poor – not everyone.

The minister said it would be unacceptable if there was free education for everyone in such an unequal society, reports EWN's Barry Bateman.

He says that government's plan is to provide free education for those people who cannot afford it and those who would be excluded on financial grounds. Adding that government policy would not be changing anytime soon.
