Quintessential Cape Town: Southern Oil biggest producer of Canola oil in SA

Southern Oil (PTY) Ltd is a Cape Town based company, a modern oil extraction plant and edible oil refinery situated in Swellendam.

Managing Director, Kellie Becker, says it all started in 1996 when the Department of Agriculture initiated the process and brought investors on board.

The aim then was to produce Canola Oil to supply the local market but now they supply markets both nationally and internationally.

He says what makes Canola special is it's low saturated fat content making it a healthier choice.

It gives a perfect balance between essential fatty acids - Omega 3 - 6

Kellie Becker, Managing director

Becker says they are the sole crusher of Canola in South Africa and the business has been matching the growth of the industry.

They employ 600 farmers that produce the crops and these farmers are also the beneficiaries of the development trust. They have 32% of black ownership in the business.
