New Public Protector focuses on cost cutting and tackling backlog

The New Public Protector Busiswe Mkhwebane will introduce herself to the public in Tshwane on Thursday.

EWN reporter Gia Niccolaides says Mkhwebane told the public that this is not about Thuli Madonsela, saying that Madonsela has run her race and this is her time.

The meeting was an opportunity to give the media and members of the public her vision as the Public Protector for the next seven years.

Mkhwebane said that she has noticed low staff morale in the office.

With regards to the state capture report, Mkhwebane said that Thuli Madonsela did not entrust her with the report to finalise it and said little about it.

She mentioned that the report is still under lock and key and that she hasn't seen it yet. The report will only be released after the matter has been heard in court.

For the next seven years, Mkhwebane says her priority would be to make the office of the Public Protector accessible to people at grass root level but that doesn't mean that she is going to ignore the elephant in the room being the state capture report.

She has made it clear that she is putting an end to funding from other states as well as the use of consultants.

The theme of her address seemed to focus on cost cutting and tackling the backlog of reports that needed to be finalised.
