Mthembu spoke out within the ANC first - Karima Brown

Political analyst Karima Brown says ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu's comments aren't from out of left field.

Jackson Mthembu obviously didn't just wake up and make this call.

Mthembu has said that the only way out of the ruling party's current problems is for the entire ANC national executive committee (NEC) to resign.

According to Brown, Mthembu had initially spoken out at an ANC Lekgotla, following their poor performance in the municipal elections in August.

Brown explains that Mthembu's comments, in the first instance, were made within an ANC structure before going public.

This, amid cautions from the ANC that its members should show restraint and not speak about internal issues in the media.

Brown maintains that Mthembu's stance is a consequence of issues within the liberation movement.

There have been calls for Mthembu to resign, but Brown explains that his resignation won't resolve problems which need to be contested within the ANC.

She says Mthembu wants the party to take collective responsibility, including himself and President Jacob Zuma in accepting fault.

Mthembu is aware of the growing sentiment within the party that is calling for change, says Brown.

Brown explains that Mthembu is the latest senior ANC figure to come out and link the party's poor performance with state capture allegations and other issues surrounding Zuma.

However, she maintains that removing Zuma as president will not resolve fundamental issues within the ruling party.

She believes that the ANC has the potential to self-correct if it roots out underlying issues involving money. She says members have financial interests and depend on the ANC for their livelihood and this needs to be eradicated.
