Cynical cops do a better job - study

A recent study headed by Dr Jean Steyn Academic Leader for Criminology UKZN, shows that the longer you stay in the police service the more cynical and isolated the officers become form the public.

According to the study, police officers who've been in the service for more than ten years believe that people will lie when questioned and the majority would steal if they believe they'll never get caught.

Steyn says police officers who are cynical and suspicious are more successful than those who are not.

However being cynical causes biased thinking, putting people in categories, describing them as (having) a greater chance of being a criminal.

This is quite a contradictory facet of what we looking for. We looking for problem solvers, people that are more flexible and sensitive.

Steyn says the only way around this in not to recruit people who are already cynical into the police, but rather recruit people who perform proactive functions and are problem solvers.
