Lesufi suspends pupils for assaulting teacher

Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has suspended four learners who were seen on video man-handling their teacher.

He says a disciplinary hearing is scheduled for next Monday for the pupils at Moletsane Secondary School.

According to Lesufi, the pupils regularly disrupt learning and intimidate the teachers and principal, and have "taken over the running of the school."

Families of the learners have also asked the Social Development Department to intervene as they are out of control.

The South African Council for Educators (SACE) has condemned the behaviour of the learners and their classmates.

SACE communications manager Themba Ndhlovu says that there are many more cases of educators being abused by learners that are not reported.

Ndhlovu has applauded Lesufi for taking swift action in the matter and has urged other MECs to do the same.
