#CapeTownFire - Day 3 in the Southern Peninsula

The City of Cape Town says firefighters have managed to create boundaries for the fires in Chapman’s Peak on the Hout Bay side, Tokai Forest, and Noordhoek.

Firefighting crews continue to deal with sporadic flares in other parts of the Southern Peninsula. Emergency teams are monitoring the situation on the mountain slopes and the status of Clovelly near Kalk Bay.

The City reports that a few estates on the Noordhoek side of Chapman’s Peak are under threat, but no other damage to property has been reported since Monday.

Water-bombing in Hout Bay continues today in an effort to protect the properties in close proximity to the blaze along Military Road, Hugo Street, and Avenue Suzanne.

EWN has a tool to illustrate how big the fire is.

Five homes have been damaged along Silvermine Road in Noordhoek. The Tintswalo Lodge, the Chapman's Peak toll plaza and the Silvermine Tented Camp have also been damaged.

Residents of the San Michelle Old-Age Home and the Noordhoek Manor Retirement Village were evacuated as well as over 30 houses Noordhoek. Residents of the retirement home have since been able to return home.

Mass care centres have been established for those displaced as a result of the fire. The Dutch Reformed Church in Kommetjie Road, Fish Hoek, the Dutch Reformed campsite in Noordhoek and the Fish Hoek Community Hall all serve as sanctuaries.

The veld fire reportedly started from above Boyes Drive in Muizenberg on Sunday 1 March and has spread out to over 3 000 hectares since.

The City’s advice for members of the public in affected areas:

  • Hose down thatched roofs
  • Keep all windows closed, and;
  • Call the City of Cape Town’s 107 Public Emergency Call Centre in the event of an emergency. (Dial 107 from a landline and 021 480 7700 from a cellphone)

Road closures: Chapman’s Peak Drive and Boyes Drive between the golf course and Old Boyes Drive.
