Does lack of sex leave you feeling depressed?

A recent study conducted by pharmaceutical firm, Pharma Dynamics found that a lack of sexual intimacy led to elevated symptoms of depression.

The survey polled women of various walks of life, all in committed relationships, between the ages of 18 and 55 on the effects that sex – or the lack thereof – have on their mental well-being.

It seems this is a subject which resonates with Redi's listeners. A caller, Sipho from Katlehong shared how he finds it difficult to have sexual intercourse with the two women in his life. He started experiencing this problem after the death of his father. However, he recently started having sexual intercourse with the mother of his child whom they broke up ten years ago. He wanted to know what could be the cause of lack of interest in having sex with the two women, why a sudden interest in a woman he dated ten years ago and what can he do to remedy the situation.

Dr Eve explained Sipho's problem as some kind of depression which is linked to the passing of his father. She said Sipho might be finding it easy to connect to the mother of his child because their relationship might be throwing him back to the happy days when his father was alive. She also suggested grief counseling for Sipho.

We misunderstand depression, we imagine it as being coiled up in a corner in the dark room and of course that is one of the ways people express depression but there is something called 'masked depression' where you can be absolutely functional and happy but inside you are really not doing great.
