As NPA case crumbles against Gordhan, Suzman Foundation file to strike charges

Sars lawyer. Vlok Symington, reportedly told the organisation's top leadership that he wasn't willing to be involved in the prosecution of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan for ethical reasons.

It's emerged that a string of emails involving the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority's case against Pravin Gordhan has led to an alleged "hostage situation" at the Sars Pretoria office.

There was an apparent altercation between Sars employee Vlok Symington, four Hawks officials and Sars commissioner Tom Moyane's body guard last week.

EWN reporter, Gia Niccolaides explained how this seems to have unfolded.

Moyane apparently made a mistake and forwarded the questions from the Hawks to Symington along with the statement from the lawyer and then the Hawks tried to get this email back which is what led to this whole alleged assault of Symington in his office, last week.

It is reported that Brigadier Nyameka Xaba, the Hawks lead investigator against Gordhan, was present when the altercation happened, but the Hawks are not willing to comment on this matter.

Meanwhile, Freedom Under Law and the Helen Suzman Foundation announced that they have filed a supplementary affidavit in their application to have criminal charges against Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, struck down.

CapeTalk/702's Stephen Grootes spoke to Piet Olivier, legal researcher for the Helen Suzman Foundation.

What the NPA is doing here, they are desperately trying to further evidence to support what seems to be a hopeless case.
