Finance Minister confirms Eskom will head up nuke programme

Energy expert and managing director at EE Publishers, Chris Yelland, says Eskom has better commercial and technical resources to successfully run and manage the procurement of the nuclear deal.

Yesterday during his Medium Term Budget speech, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that Eskom will be in charge of the nuclear procurement programme and the Department of Energy will be the coordinating agent.

Yelland says there are still a lot of details to be resolved, which will include Treasury, procurement agency and business model.

We don't know at the moment whether we need nuclear, and if we do need it how much do we need and how much it's going to cost.

Chris Yelland, energy expert
