The centre is holding - Gwede Mantashe

Over 100 ANC veterans released a statement on Thursday in which they say the ANC is losing the moral high ground. ANC members who have signed the statement can be found here.

The veterans said they are releasing a public statement because efforts to get a response from Luthuli House are unsuccessful.

Gwede Manthashe, ANC Secretary General says the party is in a process on engaging with members and public criticism is not constructive.

65 of those veterans sent us a letter and we said to them we are working on a conference of veterans. They must all go under one roof and structure their approach rather than approaching us in small groups.

Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary General

Mantashe says veterans of the ANC should learn to be patient as engagement is a process. He says veterans should help with the process and not sulk on the sidelines and criticise.

He says the centre is holding and the party has not lost control.

Cadres run away from the centre and we have to call them back.

Gwede Mantashe, ANC sec-general

The ANC always has the capacity to heal itself, he says, and the processes of engagement are in preparation for the elective conference next year and elections in 2019.
