A new game to encourage emotional expression in children

Smart Heart is a revolutionary board game that has been developed to encourage emotional expression in children. If your child's birthday is coming up and you haven’t figured out what to buy, maybe getting your child Smart Heart won’t be such a bad idea.

Developed by Christine Kritzas and Janet Bytheway, two psychologists from Cape Town, Smart Heart aims to encourage children to think for themselves and create solutions to their problems.

Emotional expression is a life skill; it’s a skill that needs to be taught to children. Not every child is born with the skill of emotional expression. Yes, you do get children who are able to express their needs more clearly than others but the majority struggle with emotional expression

Christine Kritzas

According to Kritzas Smart Heart creates a playful way for children to speak about serious issues. It is a conversational tool that allows children to talk about their own experiences.

The game aims to change the way many children express themselves and interact with others through the use of picture and word cards that assist children in identifying and communicating their feelings. Looking at the pictures, a child gets to tell a tale of what they have witnessed or experienced. Kritzas says parents should ask questions like’ have you ever felt that’? Or ‘has that ever happened to you’?

It is important to use the child’s language when playing the game

The board game can be ordered directly from their website: www.charts4hearts.co.za
