Noah's Ark lands in the land of milk and honey, For Who? For What?
As soon as the news broke that Jon Steward was to leave The Daily Show there was a "proverbial" flood of potentials that raised their hands up ready to fill up his shows, but as the bible has taught us, it was Noah's ark that resisted the flooding. This is no joke at all but South African comedian Trevor Noah will be named as the new and third host of what has become known as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
The half-hour-long show premiered on July 21, 1996 and was hosted by Craig Kilborn until December 1998. Jon Stewart took over as host in January 1999, making the show more strongly focused on politics and the national media, in contrast with the pop culture focus during Kilborn's tenure. Stewart's version is currently the second longest-running program on Comedy Central after South Park, and has won 18 Prime time Emmy Awards.
Trevor Noah had a stint as a TV show host here at home but the show didn't do that well and was cancelled by DStv. The comedian was also the butt of all jokes as other comedians used to accuse him of stealing "their jokes". Well Trevor's journey has now seen him not only appear on The Daily Show three times but also in 2012, Noah featured on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, making him the first stand-up comedian in Africa to do so. Last year, he featured on The Late Show with David Letterman and has appeared on several programmes in the US.
Trevor's long journey of comedy has seen him land what is arguably the biggest seat in world comedy, the legacy of Jon Stewart and the Daily Show is something not only Americans but the world notes with great respect. Satire is a popular form of telling news in a way that doesn't sound so bad and local show #LNN has been nominated numerous times for Emmy awards, hosted by the lanky Loyiso Gola and a team of comedians.
How will Americans receive Trevor's humour? Only time will tell but for now we celebrate this great achievement by a proudly South African, South African. Below are some of your tweets reacting to the news.
No-one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show!— Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) March 30, 2015
