The rise of the Military-Internet Complex (and Earth as a Surveilled World)

In “@War: The Rise of the Military-Internet Complex” author Shane Harris says that the US military views cyberspace as the “fifth domain” alongside land, air, sea and space.

He also discusses the huge teams of hackers, employed by the Department of Defense, the NSA and the CIA, launching attacks against enemy targets.

You’ll shudder to learn that, according to Harris, every single communications company cooperates with the “national security establishment”. Google, Facebook, Apple… they all collect mindboggling amounts of data from you and hand it over to the US government.

“Cyber-espionage is the single most productive means of gathering information about our country’s adversaries,” writes Harris.

Harris is convincing when he argues the inevitability of dreadful cyber disasters and the invasive nature of the fight to avert them.

The US, instead of bombing Iran, designed a “worm” to set back Iran’s quest to gain nuclear weapons.

You need to create an 'air gap' in your organisation that doesn't touch the internet. The US government certainly does this.

In the US it’s illegal, but a lot of companies are “hacking back” in retaliation to being hacked.
