It was announced earlier this week that Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson had signed a deal with Russia's Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation to procure 9.6 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2030.
Energy expert Chris Yelland says the press releases don't offer enough information about the agreement that was reached.
The R111 billion deal was signed on Monday and experts say it needs to be a transparent process. The deal is also expected to create thousands of jobs.
Prof Renfrew Christie knows a lot about nuclear power – he understands the technicalities, economies and the politics of it. (He went to prison for spying on Koeberg for the ANC.)
He says he can understand the logic behind this deal, and as he understands it, government has 'shopped around' and this seems to be the most cost effective deal.
