Why did van Rooyen visit the Gupta home 7 times before his appointment?

Minister Des van Rooyen allegedly visited the Gupta's family private residence in Saxonwold seven times ahead of his appointment as Minister of Finance.

The new revelations form part of the state capture story, with allegations that several high-ranking politicians, (President Jacob Zuma, ministers, ANC politicians, and leaders of state-owned entities) are in cahoots with the Gupta business family.

Van Rooyen's December appointment after President Jacob Zuma fired Nhlanhla Nene sent the markets into panic mode and the rand plunge to an all-time low. Calm was restored after Pravin Gordhan was deployed as van Rooyen's replacement a few days later.

It's a break-up of certain post-apartheid political structures but it's also the break-up of the Zuma political machine.

Stephen Grootes, EWN

In an effort to make sense of the conundrum, 702's John Robbie spoke to EWN senior reporter Stephen Grootes to hear his analysis of the issue.

Grootes said the growing concern about state capture has started gaining credibility as members of the governing party speak out against Zuma.

Zuma's court interdict will be heard this week after he applied for an urgent interdict preventing Thuli Madonsela from revealing her report on state capture.

It remains to be seen how the debacle unfolds.

It shows you how the money was moved around the country and out of the country through companies that don't do anything, they are shelf companies. Now why would you do that? There's lots of pressure on the Guptas.
