Joburg Gay Pride march under fire for being divisive and apolitical

The 2016 Joburg Gay Pride March has come under criticism by members within the LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-sexual, inter-sexed, queer) community.

The annual event, which was held at Melrose Arch over the weekend, saw members of the community gather to enjoy themselves and raise awareness about challenges they face.

However, some people who attended said the event lacks the activism required to address issues that are specific to the cause and which creates barriers between LGBTIQ people from different social classes.

In response to his concerns, Eusebius McKaiser said that while he shares his sentiments on a few issues, the event could symbolise different things as political consciousness varied among members of the LGBTIQ community.

Engaging him further, he said that it was incorrect to discredit the politics or views of people who decide to attend based on his opinion.
