NPA must remain independent - Gwede Mantashe

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe says the ruling party will no longer go to the High Court on Wednesday now that the National Prosecuting Authority has withdrawn fraud charges against Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan.

Civil society organisations including Save South Africa will go ahead with their planned march and public campaign against state capture despite withdrawal of charges against Gordhan, former Sars Deputy Commissioner Ivan Pillay and former Sars Commissioner Oupa Magashula.

Mantashe says it is the responsibility of the appointing authority to hold NPA accountable because 'once you try to shape the NPA, we are going to have a disaster', he said.

The problem is that when you have hashtag must fall then even when reasons for a particular course are removed you still continue. We have seen it in many instances.

Some of us who were going to court, have no reason to go to court now. Because we were going to court in the gallery not in a march.

Gwede Mantashe, ANC secretary general

Mantashe says the ANC will not interfere in processes of the NPA or 'try to shape and structure the NPA'.

He says the ministry that the NPA reports to must find out whether there was a political influence.

Once you try to shape the NPA, and say it must do this or not that, we are going to have disaster.
