Overcrowding at major prisons three times worse than before

The Department of Correctional Services is engaging Treasury and the police to try and find solutions to the overcrowding in prisons.

"With sentencing options in our country, it has impacted negatively on our numbers so we have quite a number of long-termers and those with life sentences. A few years ago we were at 4 000, now we are at 15 000."

Speaking to John Robbie, National Commissioner for Correctional Services Zach Modise said that after engaging human rights groups, his department will be providing the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee with recommendations this week on how to overcome overcrowding - especially in the five major installations houing long term prisoners.
