Guptas eager to present their version on state capture allegations

The lawyer representing the Gupta family, Gert Van De Merwe, says they are happy that the Public Protector's report 'ends at point where we have an opportunity to represent our version'.

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report recommended that the Chief Justice appoints a Judge to chair the judicial commission of inquiry.

Among other things, the report reveals that the Gupta family allegedly offered deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas R600 million. It says Eskom CEO Brian Molefe called Ajay Gupta 44 times between August 2015 and March 2016. Click here to read summary of the report.

The moment the Judge gives me the opportunity to give my version, then you can safely say the report has stated something.

Gert Van De Merwe, lawyer representing the Gupta family

The Gupta's lawyer says the report as it stands is evidence gathered from 'a specific source' and urges that the report be read in this way.

The report is a collation of the evidence gathered by Advocate Thuli Madonsela. Duly so, I do not disapprove of that. In fact, I am happy that we have this information, so that I can prepare my case and present to the judge.

Gert Van De Merwe, lawyer representing the Gupta family

He reminded Stephen Grootes that he had asked Madonsela to hear his clients' version of events, but had been unsuccessful.

It's unreasonable to phone me the next morning and say what is my response on page 90 of the 365 on what actual happened.

Gert Van De Merwe, lawyer representing the Gupta family

He says he needs time to read the report and follow his clients instructions. He says he is concerned with the time-frames stipulated in the report, not believing it will be sufficient time to prepare.
