The Friday Stand-In 2016

Creative heavyweights talk the business of fashion and art

You can make a successful and sustainable career from your passion.

Fashion innovator and Laduma Ngxokolo and artist Stephan Erasmus are living proof.

Ngoxolo, the founder of internationally acclaimed knitwear range Maxhosa, says South Africa has a lot of creative talent to share with the world.

The Port Elizabeth-born creative studied knitwear design and says he's always been a black sheep for following his own creative direction.

But Ngoxolo says that there are many other African brands that have the potential to make a mark in the international fashion industry.

The designer advises that local creatives need to be invested in and armed with the necessary entrepreneurial skills to help people develop their crafts.

I pray that the infrastructure of the South African industry would change for the better and reach world class standard.

He says that his success has allowed to make income and supports other local business.

Meanwhile, artist and curator Stephan Erasmus says truly passionate creatives have the ability to drive themselves to create their work and make it marketable.

Erasmus says there is a need to equip artists with financial know-how in order for them manage their money and make their creative career sustainable.

It's not just a job. It's a lifestyle.
