Zuma may not take Jiba, Mrwebi to task

President Jacob Zuma will now find himself in a tight spot after the scathing High Court judgment against senior NPA officials advocates Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi.

The pair were struck off the roll of advocates, following several adverse judicial findings against them.

Former NPA boss Mxolisi Nxasana says, despite feeling vindicated, he is disappointed that the Presidency failed to act when he first raised his concerns.

EWN reporter Mandy Weiner says Jiba and Mrwebi have been central to a great deal of controversy or dramatic developments in the criminal justice system, says Weiner, and the matter is key to independence of the judiciary.

The pair were found to have gone to extreme lengths to protect former crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli from prosecution on charges of fraud and corruption.

Weiner says Jiba's proximity to Zuma has been able to secure her position at the NPA for all these years.

The president needs to be seen as acting against Jiba now.

Constitutional law expert Prof Pierrie De Vos says Zuma may avoid making any definitive move until Jiba's court appeal has been heard.

The legal process is still continuing. Until the last court finality has rejected Jiba's appeal, he's not going to act.

Prof Pierrie De Vos, Constitutional Law expert

De Vos explains that Jiba may only be suspended by Zuma following an inquiry that would be recommended by the courts.
