Stellies University to revise language policy, fears that Afrikaans will be lost

Stellenbosch University is planning to revise the language policy so that students from non-Afrikaans backgrounds can be accommodated.

But some were concerned that this would see the demise of Afrikaans, even though the university council said that they did not plan on scaling back on their Afrikaans offerings.

Prof Wim de Villiers Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University speaks to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about what this means.

I would like to sum it up in two words, and that is inclusive multilingualism.

He says when he was inaugurated some 18 months ago he made it clear that Stellenbosch University is not a Afrikaans, English or isiXhosa university, but rather a national asset that is multilingual.
