US Ambassador to South Africa, Patrick Gaspard, says the limits on powers will not allow the newly elected Donald Trump to do as he pleases. There are a great deal of legislative and executive checks and balances.
Gaspard says Trump has the responsibility to work and move towards inclusion, and he has promised that in his acceptance speech shortly after his win was announced.
He says as much as many Americans as may have been shocked by the news, half the country is happy that Trump is the next President.
I have faith in Americans and a lot of people to hold him accountable.— Patrick Gaspard, US Ambassador to South Africa
Much of the campaign focused on the two candidates personality differences, rather than their policy differences, he added.
The Daily Maverick Africa correspondent, Simon Allison, says no one really knows what Trump is going to do when he begins office.
Allison says the political class didn't get 'this right'.
Trump's policies have been contradictory and we don't really know what is going to happen when he gets to office.— Simon Allison, The Daily Maverick Africa correspondent
Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he will only accept trade deals that are only in the interest of American people.— Simon Allison, The Daily Maverick Africa correspondent
