Flood damage creates havoc to Joburg traffic lights

The floods in Johannesburg, and Gauteng more broadly, have seen many traffic lights out of order.

Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) Managing Director Dr Sean Phillips joins Stephen Grootes on the line to explain what contingencies they are adopting to alleviate the problem.

Phillips says on Thursday morning, the day after the flash floods, the JRA received reports of 108 traffic light faults - this compared to a normal morning where they receive about 40 fault reports.

By the end of Thursday we had addressed 71 of those 108 faults.

He says the JRA teams are working hard to get the traffic lights back up and running.

Given the predictions of further heavy rains predicted over the weekend, we are going to increase our stand-by teams over the weekend to work on the repairs.

Phillips says today they have again had an extraordinarily high level of faults reported, 87 new reports this morning - and had repaired 20 by 10 am.

This is due due to the ground being extremely water logged and water is easily seeping into the cable joints.

Some faults have been caused by power outages due to high levels of water damaging submerged power and controller traffic light boxes.

City Power did a sterling job on Thursday.

He acknowledges that the management of traffic lights does have room for improvement and they have been implementing new programmes such as installing uninterrupted power supply units and better earthing to help alleviate some problems.
