How to properly plan for family travel

The end of the year is fast approaching and many families are preparing to go on holiday somewhere new.

Travel counsellor Shihaam Williams has, however, warned that last minute travel arrangements are not cost-effective.

She says that travelling abroad is particularly pricey, advising that families should prepare at least six months in advance to make make provisions for expensive flight costs.

Here's advice on how to prepare for international travel ahead of time:

  • make sure you have passports
  • ensure that the passports are valid
  • check the visa requirements for the destination, including transit visas for connecting travel
  • create a budget for how much you plan to spend
  • cross-check your budget with the holiday destination, keeping in mind what season it is
  • make sure that you are aware of the health precautions needed including vaccinations
  • find out what the baggage allowance is for your travel
  • invest in travel insurance
  • write up a travel checklist

Williams says that, aside from international travel, there are domestic destinations that make for excellent family holiday trips such as Mpumalanaga, Cape Town, Sun City.

She explains that road-tripping has become increasingly popular and is is cost-effective alternative.

Here's advice on how to prepare for road-trips:

  • check that it is the right time of the year to road trip
  • ensure that there is enough food, water and entertainment for the ride
  • stopover for rests at least once every hour.
