Hawks probe into rhino poaching started before Al Jazeera

Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, says they've been aware that Al Jazeera was conducting an investigation into rhino poaching.

The Al Jazeera’s documentary‚ The Poachers Pipeline, implicates State Security Minister David Mahlobo in a rhino poaching ring.

The documentary showed a rhino horn trafficker bragging to Al Jazeera about his close connections to David Mahlobo.

Images also emerged showing Mahlobo with some of the staff members of a massage parlour owned by the rhino horn trafficker.

Mahlobo responded to the allegations in which he acknowledged knowing the rhino horn trafficker and visiting the massage parlour but says he is not friends with him and his visits to the parlour were for pleasure not business.

The Hawks says the matter has been in their radar for a very long time and informed Al Jazeera that they are working on it.

Mulaudzi says the investigation continues and they are currently collecting more data and building a strong case before handing it over to the NPA.

The allegations of the Minister are very serious. He has come out saying that he is clean.
